Small Groups - Mrs. Mahern
In the morning, the children played a math game called roll and trace. The children rolled a number dice and then traced the corresponding number on their game boards. The activity worked on both numeral identification and number writing.
In the afternoon, Ms. Alexis led an activity about sharing. She read the book Should I Share My Ice Cream? Then, the children played a game where they asked a friend "Would you like to share my ice cream?" The friend would respond, "Yes, please." The children would then pass the 'ice cream' to their friend using a paper cone. The children drew pictures of something they share as a culmination to the activity.
We reviewed our letter of the week on Tuesday. This week's letter was letter K.
We used the remainder of the time on Tuesday to practice counting to 20. Many of the children are skipping numbers in the teens when counting. We worked on slowing down and focusing in order to not skip any numbers. The children choose a manipulative and practiced counting out the items.
Our group of Pre-K children had two small group times on Wednesday. We doubled up on small group time to allow plenty of time to work on teen numbers. Many of the children in the group have been skipping numbers while counting to 20. We are working on slowing down and saying each number when we count. The children counted with number lines, played teen number i spy, and built number by adding a single digit number to 10.
Rhyming words was the focus of Thursday's small group. We clapped rhyming words and then wrote them to observe that the letters are the same at the end of the rhyming words.
We continued our work on teen numbers on Friday! It was a time for celebrating because every child in the group is now consistently counting to 20 without skipping any numbers.
The children were introduced to ten frames and built numbers to 20 using the ten frames.
