The story was introduced by a discussion of the children's favorite type of cookies. We created a favorite cookie graph.
Next, we read the story, The Duckling Gets a Cookie.
During the story, pigeon becomes upset when he thinks he's being treated unfairly . He is upset because the duckling, who is very polite, gets a cookie. Pigeon thinks Duckling gets everything, but Pigeon never gets anything. Pigeon has a temper tantrum, only to find out the Duckling got the cookie for Pigeon.
The story led to a class discussion on manners and how to politely ask for something.
The children acted out the story. Pigeon demanding the cookie and Duckling politely asking for the cookie.
Then, the children paired up and role played asking for the cookie. First, they demanded the cookie in a loud and not polite voice. Next, they politely asked for the cookie and remembered to say please.
Finally, the children drew a picture to retell the story.
I hope we have many polite 'Ducklings' using their manners at home.
