Writing Numbers

Our class spent the beginning of the school year with number activities focused on counting , one to one correspondence, and building number sense.  In the past month, we have transitioned to number identification and numeral writing.  I have previously shared the terminology, from our Learning without Tears program, that we use for writing letters.  We use the same terminology for writing numbers. Using the words big line, little line, big curve, little curve, and slide line.  Additionally, we begin writing all numbers at the top, just like we do for letters.

While writing numbers, we also focus on proper pencil grip.  

The most efficient pencil grip for handwriting is the dynamic tripod grip. In this grip, the pencil is held between the tips of the thumb, index, and middle finger. The index finger controls the pencil's movement, while the thumb and middle finger help with direction.

Fall Nature Hunt

The Oak class ventured outside to collect nature items and observe the colors of fall.  We visited the outdoor classroom, the grove, our playground, and the little kids playground.  The children completed the nature scavenger hunt and also collected items that they found interesting.  When we returned to the room, the children sorted the items by characteristic (ie. type, color, size).
