Step by Step Drawing

This week, the Oak children were introduced to our new step-by-step drawing book, Drawing Animals Shape by Shape. Whenever we have a little extra time, the class gathers and chooses an animal to draw together.

On Monday, we drew cats and chicks for letter C day! On the other days, the children suggest an animal, and we flip through the book to see if it’s included. The excitement of the search is part of the fun.

What is directed drawing?
It’s a step-by-step activity where children follow sequential directions to build a picture using basic shapes and lines.

Why we love it:

  • Learning to sequence, plan, and strategize
  • Building confidence as a picture comes together
  • Practicing listening and following directions
  • Strengthening fine motor skills
  • Developing spatial awareness and proportions
