Lines Make Letters

Today, we discussed that letters are made by lines and curves.  We use the Handwriting without Tears, HWOT, program in Ganon.  HWOT begins by teaching straight line letters.

The Handwriting Without Tears program explains "The Handwriting Without Tears teaching sequence takes advantage of child development and brain research to promote effective learning and good habits. Teaching letters in a developmental order helps children master skills and boosts confidence. We teach capitals first, and then lowercase letters."

Our discussion and activities about letters being made by lines and curves was an introduction to the terminology used in the HWOT program.  We will continue activities that focus on both observing and writing lines for the next few days.  Our first letter day is Thursday and it is Letter L Day.  We will participate in Letter L activities throughout the day. Children are encouraged to bring a Show and Tell item that begins with L.
