Magnificent Math

The children continued their work on arranging numbers 1 -10 in order.  This week, they added counting out items to their math task.

Our class is beginning to focus on writing numerals.  We discussed how numbers are made using lines, curves, and slide lines, just like letters.

The children wrote numbers with chalk in the outdoor classroom.

The children picked tomatoes from the Ganon garden.

We then estimated how many tomatoes were in our basket.  We discussed that an estimate is a guess that we make using our knowledge about numbers.

There were 18 tomatoes in the basket.  

Patterning activities were available to the children each day during free play.

Counting beans and matching to our domino cards was another free play activity.

He put all of the cards in order from
1 - 20 at clean up time.

Another math free play activity invited the children to explore the cuisenaire rods and rulers.  Cuisenaire rods can be used to line up to show that many smaller quantities are equivalent to one larger quantity.  

During whole group time, the children choose numbers and then counted a corresponding number of cubes.

We also began playing a new math game called Guess the number between 1 - 10.  The game teaches the math terms less than and greater than.

Ellie was the winner of the game today.  :)
