Lines Make Letter

This morning at our morning circle we passed out dry erase boards and markers.  The directions were simple MAKE LINES.  Children wrote long lines, short lines and even diagonal lines.  Each child was actively engaged in the line making.  Then it got really exciting because one child put her lines together and created the letter E.  This was an amazing thing to many of the children and they all began writing E's, then X's, F's, L's and even M's.  One child who has told me several times that he can't write letters said "WOW!  Letters are easy!  I just make lines." 

Judaics Week 3

Dear Parents,

Ganon Judaics is short, sweet and jam-packed!

We are enjoying each other, having interesting discussions and learning a lot!

The Jewish calendar has 12 months, the last being Elul 

(usually during august/sept)

This month precedes Rosh Hashana and is the month we prepare for the New Year. It is customary during the month of Elul to hear the shofar blowing each day as a reminder to improve our ways. We hear the shofar blowing from Rabbi Gluck each day and we introduced real shofrot (shofar pl) in our class. Children have turns trying to blow (of course we disinfect between children) and they realized that what looks so easy is really difficult. One of our Ganon'ers managed to get a nice blast! 

Rams, rams, rams...so manu colors, shapes and sizes. We observed many real photos of rams and each made our own version. Children were offered a variety of materials and tried to recreate what they observed. We had fun playing with plastic animals figuring out which had horns and which did not, then we divided the horned animals into 'not shofar horn' and 'yes shofar horn'. We also used wooden animal puzzles to reinforce this fun topic!

Many new songs were introduced recently and with each one, we use use either rhythm sticks, instruments or movement activities. The children cover many skills this way without realizing they are learning because they enjoy it so much!

During t'fillah each day, another 2 children get to hold our Torah. They look forward to their turn with great anticipation. Additionally, we have a job chart for daily tzedakah helper and weekly Abba and Imma. 

Next week we will explore customs and traditions of Rosh Hashana.

ps try to 'catch' your child doing a special mitzvah-good deed- so you can write a note to us. You can just imagine how much they love being in the spotlight when we read the mitzvah notes out loud!

Newsletter Week 3

Creative Creations in the Art Center

Today I really enjoyed watching the Ganon children work in the Art Center.  Many of the children worked together to make creation.  They shared materials, made a plan and shared ideas.  As I listened to the children work, I heard them naming letters, counting materials, sorting buttons and comparing lengths of items.  This is just some of the learning that was going on as they created their masterpieces.
