Numbers, Numbers, and more Numbers

Today was all about numbers.  We did so many different number activities.  The activities allowed us to work with children at their personal math level.  The focus for some children is writing numbers.  Other children are focusing on number recognition of numbers 1 - 20.  Other children are interested in large numbers.  Building a stronger number sense is a focus for other children.  

We began our day by a Listening and Guessing Game about Numbers during our Morning Meeting.  

One question was what number is made by using one big line and two little lines.  (Answer is 4).

Another question was what number is created using two big lines.  (Answer is 11).

Next, we went on a Number Hunt around the school and the children wrote the numbers that they found.

As a transition from Quiet Time, the children chose a bag with a number on it and then found that many items to put inside the bag.

Then, during large group we played POP.  Number recognition and what number comes before or after a certain number are the learning objectives of this game.

Some children use a number line as a tool to assist them during the game.

The afternoon was spent participating in math centers.

January Self Portraits

Welcome Back!  It was so nice to see all the children this morning! I have missed their smiling faces during the break.  We even welcomed a new friend named Hannah to our class today!  

A new month (and a new year) means that it is time to do another self portrait.  We began by creating Mat Men on the carpet during our Morning Meeting.  Next, each child  drew their self portrait using markers.  Finally, the children dictated something special that they did during the Winter Break.  The self portraits will be on display in our Dramatic Play area for the month.
