Pop Art

Each month the children create a self portrait.  We hang the portraits on the wall of our Dramatic Play Center.  Each month we change the pictures and the old ones go in the children's portfolios.  We use a variety of mediums to create the self portraits.  We have used crayons, markers, pencils and even rocks.  This month we used water color paint.

This time as we created our self portraits a child commented that he wished we could just take a picture (photo) and color it.  A group of students agreed that would be an excellent idea.

This gave me the idea of introducing them to Andy Warhol and Pop Art.  We looked at several of Warhol's art pieces.  I explained that the process that he used was different but we could try our version.  I printed out black and white photos of the children.  They were given markers and allowed to create their own Pop Art creation.  Several children commented on how silly it was to color on a picture.  Two other children agreed it was silly but awesome.
