The children dictate stories monthly in the Ganon class. Story diction is what occurs when a child tells a story or a description of a person or event, and the teacher writes it down exactly as the child said it. There are many benefits of dictation with young children. One benefit is that it models that print has value and purpose. It also provides exposure to phonemic awareness. Additionally, it helps children make the connection between letter sounds and letters. During dictation activities, the teacher is also modeling conventions such as uppercase letters, lower case letters, and punctuation.
Children are often given writing prompts to help them focus their dictation. Today, the children were told to choose an animal as a character in their story.
