The Apple Market: A Season of Learning in Action
One of the true highlights of the PreK year at Giving Tree is our annual apple market! Each fall, our Oak children take the lead in planning, preparing, and running an apple market for the early childhood and Kindergarten classes — and along the way, they discover just how much work goes into running a business.
Bags are decorated, labels are written, signs are painted, and apples are sorted and counted, all by the children themselves.
While the apple market brings so much joy to our youngest customers, the real magic happens in the weeks of preparation, where everyday tasks become powerful, hands-on learning opportunities:
- Literacy: Children practiced letters, phonics, and handwriting as they wrote labels for the market.
- Creative Expression: Painting and drawing signs and shopping bags gave children a chance to explore symbolic and creative representation.
- Early Math & Economics: Children created pretend money, sparking rich conversations about numbers and economics.
- Hands-On Math: Sorting, weighing, and counting apples turned stand preparation into a full math lesson.
- Social Skills: Greeting and thanking customers gave children real practice with manners and language.
