Earlier this year, the early childhood students and teachers started noticing a matching trend. Almost daily someone was matching someone else. We observed identical masks, similar themed shirts, same colored shoes, and even matching hairstyles. After weeks of watching the matching trend continue, I decided to start a 'Twinsies' Google photo album. Teachers have added to the album throughout the school year.
I began documenting the twin photos for fun and away of connecting with the other classes. The twinsies photos definitely brought some joy to the early childhood program because the children got excited each time someone was matching. I even began letting the children be the photographers. An unexpected outcome of documenting all the coordinating children and teachers is that it led to conversations about what makes each person similar and different. The children discussed different shades of skin. They also had conversations about hair and eyes. The discussions then led to similarities about children that we could not see. For example, two girls considered themselves twins because they both like gymnastics. What began as a silly way of photographing matching plaid masks has led beautiful, deep dialogue about what makes each of special.
