Letter Fun

The children are showing more and more interest in letters!  Many children are starting to know lots of letters.  Some children are developing phonetic awareness and learning letter sounds.  Other children have been making the connection that letters together make words.  While a few children are beginning to read words. 

Each day in our classroom materials are available to encourage the children's interest in letters.  Some children chose to write letters, while others enjoy letter puzzles and others enjoy using letters on the flannel boards.

Today a small group of children and I played a Letter Scavenger Hunt Game.  It is an easy game to play at home.  It just takes index cards with one letter of the alphabet written on each card.  I hide the letter cards around the classroom.  The children go and find one card at a time.  When a child finds a card then they bring it to me and say the name of the letter on the card.  If the child gets the letter name correct then they get to keep the card.  If they do not know the letter then they go and ask a friend to help them name the letter.  They return to me and tell me the name of the letter and then they get to keep it.  The entire group returns to me on the carpet once all the letters are found.  We then all work together to put the letters in order from A -Z.  (I was able to make this game more challenging for some students by having them tell me the letter sound and the name of the letter.)  Once the entire alphabet is lined up, then it is time for a little cheer.  It is fun game because the children work independently to find the letters but then work as a group to create the alphabet.
