Sound Waves

Mrs. Stoller visited our class and did some interesting science activities about sound waves.  The children were very interested and engaged in the activities.

 

The children listened to the sounds of the triangle. 

The children discovered that the smallest triangle made the longest sound.

 

Mrs. Stoller showed the children the tuning forks.

 

The children tried different mallets.  They discovered that different mallets make different sounds.  They could feel the vibrations when the mallet hit the instrument.

The children got a chance to try the mallets on their own.

 

The children were introduced to the Kalimba. 

They commented that it is fun but very hard to hear.

Observing sounds waves in the water.

First they hit the wood with the tuning fork and then placed it in the water. 

The vibrations made waves.

Exploring and comparing the different size triangles.

One child commented "it sounds like an animal coming out of water"

as he observed the tuning fork in the water

 

 

The class decided that this was their very favorite activity.  It was thrilling to see the vibrations from the tuning fork make the ping pong ball move and bounce.  There was a lot of laughter and requests for many extra turns.

 

The children were given time to move from activity to activity and explore.
